How is it being married into a large business class family and being rich to boot?
My friend Savitha got married in 1977. She was very petite and beautiful. Her father had died when she was young and she was under the guardianship of her older brother who was a bank officer. One of her relatives, who came from a wealthy business family, saw her at a wedding, fell head over heels in love with her and was adamant that he would marry her, her and only her.
Savitha’s mother and brother were overjoyed to get such an offer of marriage for her.
But there was one hitch to signing off the nuptials immediately. Savitha did not want to marry him. Her reason? The boy was Plump!
She had some funny notions. She felt that she would look tiny next to him.
Anyway, considering her family circumstances, her brother and mother dinned some sense into her and she was married off with great pomp (which the boy’s family paid for completely.)
On their wedding night, the groom who had heard about her initial reluctance to marry him due to his weight, told her that he had been trying to lose weight for a long time but was unable to do so.
Savitha spent her first night telling her new husband about low calorie foods.
I did not mention before did I?
Savitha’s major subject in her under grad. was : Nutrition and Dietetics!
Another story about the same Savitha:
After a few months Savitha came to visit us all in our native town. We were happy to see her looking cheerful and contented. We asked her what the difference between being the sister of a bank officer and the daughter-in-law of a big business family was.
She laughed and replied:
“Nothing much. There, in my husband’s house, I get not only my sarees ironed, but even my petticoats!”
